In truth, my experience is that people are on social media for a variety of reasons but unless you use these platforms just to keep up with friends and family, you should definitely have a goal in mind. This is the best way to prevent the terrible time sink social media can become.

Exactly, Heather. Anyone using social media for any business reason, should set goals and expectations. Even if it's as simple as finding old connections, that's fine. But it's important to know why you're online and set realistic expectations. Otherwise, as you said, the inevitable distraction and time sink will prevail!
