During the counter-reformation (16thC), the Roman Catholic Church was ready to ban it's already several hundred year old legacy of choral music due to the "excesses of counterpoint" obscuring the sacred words. Music was supposedly "saved" by Palestrina's "Missa Papae Marcelli" in 1556 (it's a famous story in the "early music" world). If you've ever heard serious Renaissance choral music before it was "saved" - you'd be amused that there was any uproar in the 1st place. Josquin DesPrez is considered the greatest - a contemporary of Da Vinci.
