Years ago, a friend of mine spent 3 YEARS researching which VCR to get - just by reading features in magazines & buying guides. That means I listened to his "theories" for 3 YEARS! He never went to a local electronics store to see if the "dream" machine would play his old tapes w/o a time lag in the video/audio synchronization (if you think it should be automatic thanks to SMPTE code - WRONG - all that mattered was the distance between the video & audio heads). He finally got his fancy new machine & you guessed it - had to send it back to NYC (cheaper there than locally). It wasn't compatible.

Too much theory, no testing.
