However, just like ShawnHessinger mentioned above, if you try to monetize too aggressively it can be that you'll fail to build an audience. Not having an audience makes it difficult to be profitable in the long run.

The degree of monetization you do early on will depend greatly upon the role your blog plays in your business. If you are using your blog to promote a specific product or service of your own, too much additional monetization early on could dilute your efforts to cultivate a specific audience. On the other hand, if your business model is basically advertising similar to the model behind a traditional newspaper or magazine, monetizing is probably something you should experiment with much sooner. In either case, you should definitely have some idea early on how your blog will earn revenue and how it fits into your overall business.

I agree with you. It's very important that you have an idea about how you want to monetize your blog early on. That's why it's vital to have a business plan. Just like any other traditional business, online businesses like blogging deserve just as much respect. The earning potential is great, in some cases greater than conventional businesses.
I have several purposes for my blog including branding, building my community, driving traffic, and growing my subscriber list. My main focus is to grow my subscriber list and monetize through affiliate programs/products and eventually my own products. My blog is formatted accordingly and does a great job at serving its purpose.
If I were to have ads all over my blog in an attempt to earn more money from my blog, I believe it would dramatically devalue my blog and distract from its purpose.

I have a new online venture in the pipeline that will have to do with the broadcasting of different forms, and my plan is to get referral partners and sponsors for the site. In the long run I will create products from my experiences of new media.
