Fill in the blank: "I wish I knew ______ before starting my business." To give you a few business tips, we asked several entrepreneurs, including Kelly Costello, who was featured on ABC’s “Shark Tank,” to tell us what they wish they’d known before they started their businesses.

Hi Lyceum,

Thanks for your comment!

I am currently the community manager for Bplans.com (the source of the article I posted), and I also have done some freelance work on the side. From the freelancing perspective, I wished I better understood how to price my services before starting. It takes time to realize that your customer has a different perception and value of the work than you do. At the beginning, I assumed that because I was just starting off, I should charge less for my work. What I realized later is that most of my customers didn't care about how much or how little experience I had doing the work. If they believed I could deliver, they would be willing to pay for it. It wasn't necessary for me to try and undercut the "competition," as an apology for being somewhat inexperienced.

Thanks again for your comment!

Thanks for sharing these lessons for start-ups! I nodded when I read this statement by Sheila May:

"I wish I knew: how to pitch my services to clients"

Jonathan Michael: Do you have your own business? If so, what would you wished you had figured out before you started your business?
