Lately, I have been spending some time helping business owners plan for growth and also critiquing business plans. I have to say its become apparent that there are a lot of misconceptions about the business planning process.

I always say that all plans are useless, it's the planning process that is important. Of course, I am exaggerating, but it is true that the process itself adds lot of value. Many people outsource their business plan writing to outsiders without getting involved in the process. This is a mistake.

I also like your tip #2. Without having operation / execution plan a strategy will not get you anywhere.
