Lots of people write business plans and then leave them to gather dust. Others run a mile from the very notion of a business plan. But is it just a paper exercise or what is it all about? Do you really need one and iIs there a simple way of approaching it?

The reason so many people dislike business plans is that so few see any practical use in them. And that, unfortunately, has a lot to do with how they are generally used, as something thrown together for your SCORE or SBA adviser in the hopes of finding some kind of funding to start your business. When that funding doesn't materialize, the business plan is deemed a waste of time and promptly tossed in the waste can. But, of course, business plans don't need to be stuffy, formal documents typed in a format prescribed by your local small business adviser to be effective. Make them informal tools used to guide your business and you will find them much more helpful.
