Always wonderful and inspiring to read about people who realized their goals and went above and beyond it. Great article! Thanks for posting!

Yoni, the man was a msster at marketing. I remember well what a joy it was when the mailman delivered the Sears catalogue. Paging through it with the family and ordering was magical.

Unfortunately after his death things went askew. The stores stayed very conservative and were beaten by flashier competitors. His legacy however is strong and brilliantly portrayed in this fine article!

Alan,

I have fleeting memories of the Sears Catalogue as a child. I guess today it has been supplanted by online shopping. In its time though it was probably the apex of shopping convenience and a master-stroke of advertising and marketing.

Quite a guy and quite a mind for business!

So many success stories involve seizing opportunities in the face of significant obstacles (I imagine he had to raise money to buy the watches).

And of course he had a great moustache :)

P.S. He took the watches with no money down with the agreement he would keep the profit. $5000 profit in 1880? Not too bad!

Ronika,

So many huge businesses have been built from the ground up by people who were given a tiny opportunity. I guess the strategy part is seeing the open door and walking through!

I too love the mustache!

Just think, Yoni, if he had the Hooterville-Pixley route he'd have never made it!

Duncan,

He probably would have found a way to make it. Guys with that spirit succeed no matter what.

Yoni

P.S. "Hooterville?" Heh-heh!
