It's an interesting question and one that may have been asked by plenty of mid-career people even before the financial meltdown. In my own case, I had been asking it long before the crisis, but the earth shattering realities in my own industry as well as in those of friends and associates demonstrated that it was more than an existential exercise. So I was at least done questioning by the time action was needed.
