I'd have to say that going through the motions is never enough and just sending out generic emails along with leaving generic comments will only hold people back and actually hurt their reputation. If you're going to do something, do it right because you will then have the best chance of it actually paying off. It doesn't take much guess work to understand why certain businesses send emails from generic gmail addresses that can't be traced back to anyone - for example I've been getting a lot of emails saying something like "we can increase your Google rankings, reply back to find out more" .. or something similar. They do this because they know that if they sent it from their company email address it would create a load of bad press and create a negative buzz around their brand. Although from the other side of things, the fact that it's from a no name gmail account will effectively kill conversions.
