Riddle me this, Google execs and PR department: Why did Google choose to market its search engine—probably the only product that doesn’t need advertising—in a very expensive Super Bowl commercial? That, Google, is the only real question we have for you. Why market something that’s already a winner in its space and beyond? Google’s search engine already holds roughly two-thirds of the market.

You know, John, I wonder if the answer isn't simply positioning. Other products aside, it could be that search function remains what Google wants to be most known for. True it's hard to believe there is anyone on the planet who doesn't know Google's main product is search.(I'm also convinced there are a substantial number of people who don't even know Bing exists.) But I get the feeling that all the other gizmos and gadgets (and all the other online products) remain pretty much a sort of ongoing publicity for Google's core business: online search. And I suspect they haven't yet reached the end of what that product can do.
