I am a great supporter of the importance of ensuring you have an emotional connection with your customer or consumer, as (in reality) most products or services are very similar and regulations and technology will mean that if stripped down to the basic benefits and features - there will be little real differentiation (certainly any that can be sustained over time). So you need to have a stringer connection.

As one famous quote says: "people will remember you more for how you made them FEEL, than by what you do". ...

Great post and I agree that making an emotional connection in your branding is very powerful indeed, I'm liking the three step process, it's very practical.
