Susan, thanks for the comment.

Yes you do need to understand your customers needs and desire. But I don't want to spend the time crafting something only to find the competitor down the street saying something similar. That's why I always advise looking at competitors first. I'm a big believer that you have to make your business stand out. Analyzing the competition and then doing the opposite has worked well for my business.

Interesting article. The examples you gave are tag lines which comes from their positioning. Shouldn't a business work out their positioning first which means having an understanding of their customers' needs and desires before even looking at competitors?
