One of the realities of being self-employed is that sometimes you have to act in a way that is somewhat mercenary. Sometimes, as a freelancer, you have to ask for higher rates.

MM,

It's always a dual sword. Too high and you are not competetive, too low and you lose.

Shoshi,

I agree completely. As in any service or product you walk a very fine line. If you price too high your customers can shop around and always find a lower price. If you go too low sometimes you end up working almost for free. The only solution I see is to price high and prove to others that your quality is higher and you deserve the higher pay.

I'd say you needn't feel mercenary if you believe your rates are fair. You're delivering 1st rate material that they need - you both win.
