This may work. Mr. Mayor, please don’t lump local Seattle franchise businesses in with big businesses. They’re not the same. That’s why I wrote this open letter to you.

Joel: Thanks for speaking out! The mayor should use Foursquare and check-in at the local franchise establishment in his area and say that he his sorry...

Hi Joel,

The franchise issue is an additional wrinkle in the whole minimum wage debate. Of course, other issues have also been raised. One of them is the question of whether a rule like this effective only within the city limits will tend to drive businesses out to the suburbs. In other words, can such rules only really work if they are more universal? Yet, another is whether such rules fail to take into account the radically different profit margins in different businesses. For example, does a food service or small retail business with considerable overhead have the same amount of money to allocate to a higher wage as, say, a software company?
