This video on globalization, small business and the cheese bowl of doom by small business guru Iain Scott lays out perhaps the only argument against globalization I've ever really agreed with...perhaps because it's not really an argument against globalization at all. You see, Iain, the same guy who brought us the message that small business is a lot like surf boarding, is actually making the same argument that many who advocate outsourcing for entrepreneurs often do: don't outsource your core competency. Iain argues that, in the case of the Cornish Blue Cheese Bowl in his video, a product made in the same place for years and identified with the place and circumstances under which it is produced cannot simply have its production outsourced without being, even in the minds of consumers, a completely different product. The company might have outsourced any other function from its IT, to telephone answering service to billing and invoicing, but changing the basic character of the product you produce and sell may have detrimental results. You should be careful such a move does not have an impact on your brand or why customers buy it.
