The old practice of lifetime employment has started to fray at the edges…Yet, even while making greater use of flexible staffing, Japanese companies tend to maintain a “core” staff who are the ones destined to be promoted from within.

Yes, it's totally true that generalists balance out and may even win over specialists in Japan, however in the U.S. it seems that we're looking for ever more specialized skills in our employees. The difference is that our specialized skills are not specific to particular companies so much as specific to platforms, (I guess I'm referring mainly to IT since it's my own area of expertise). Here, this kind of specialization is what seems in demand in the job market. Just IMHO. Thanks for the post!
