Time and again, research has shown that money is not the main motivation when it comes to job satisfaction. Employees need to feel they are contributing and that it is appreciated. Perhaps recognition should start with the type of common courtesy and daily sense of value you would like everyone at your company to feel?

Alastair,

I had a supervisor many years ago who actively solicited proposals for streamlining the business. Once I submitted a proposal to him; I thought it was really good. He said "I just don't know if it'll work." He was a very shifty guy. About a week later he introduced the proposal in a team meeeting...as his own! I'm not one to take that lying down. I confronted him in front of everybody including the owner and adamantly stated/yelled that it was my idea. Why was he taking the credit? The supervisor in question accused me of not being a team player.

It pissed me off and sapped my motivation. It also made me fantasize for the remainder of my tenure about tying him up, blindfolding him, sticking a sock in his mouth, throwing him in the trunk of my car, driving him across the Mexican border and throwing him out with a sign that said "I am a snitch trying to infiltrate a cocaine cartel."

Bastard!

Lol. Very creative revenge there Yoni. He'd certainly think twice about stealing ideas after that experience.

You've got to wonder about how much attention senior managers pay sometimes. I mean you've got a team and the guy who leads them has all these great ideas and the team members have none, isn't there something wrong?

Very nice list. These are all important and the absence of any can sour a relationship. People need to feel valued.

Thanks Rochelle. When we start talking about how people feel there is always a danger of going all hippy on it. When I step back and realise that the pressures of my day can get in the way of just treating the people who work with me well. That's a different thing and remembering to do a few simple things can make a big difference.
