Tomas,

To be perfectly honest, I'm not sure where Seth would stand on protecting business ideas. My point is that it can be extremely difficult to both protect your idea and spread it. One would always seem to be at the expense of the other.

Heather, I had heard that Seth Godin comment before. But I never connected it to protecting a business idea. Thank you for connecting those two things. I think you are dead on.

Tomas,

Your reader's question makes me think of the comment by Seth Godin in one of his talks about living in an age of idea diffusion. The concept is that whoever is able to spread an idea the best wins. The trick is not only to be able to spread that idea but also to be able to profit from it. Sometimes entrepreneurs let fear that someone else will steal their idea and cut them out stop them from sharing that idea with others. This kind of fear is probably misplaced, because we often forget that while someone can easily steal our idea, they cannot necessarily steal our execution of that idea and that makes all the difference.
