(1) I always check my bag. It's too much of a hassle these days to carry a bag on the plane. Never have anything valuable in your suitcase, however. Put all electronics in your briefcase or tote bag that you keep with you. It helps if you are an "Elite" frequent flier - then no bag charges to pay.
(2) Instead of a DVD for a laptop, I use an iPod Touch and download movies, music and books on it it. It's much easier to use that for entertainment while traveling -- it's not as bulky as a laptop, and faster to power up and power down (important for when you have a flight attendant glaring at you saying "I need ALL electronic devices turned off NOW!"). I suppose an iPad would also be an option.

We're doing much more business travel these days so these tips really come in handy. Maybe we could get a few more travel suggestions from other members here in the comment section and get a real discussion going with even more helpful tips.

And I haven't broken down and gotten an iPod or iPad yet, but it's just a matter of time. My laptop is a bit too bulky anyway, although it is nice to send a few emails when the airline offers wifi.
