re: the vanity award scam - doesn't just happen with businesses. I almost got scammed by something similar when I first got into poetry.

Yes, they chose one of my poems and wanted me to pay for the book it was going to be in. What I didn't know was it would only have been bought by those who had their poems in it. I later found out they were less than genuine when I was online one day - and then from there I found out more.

I was lucky. I didn't part with any money, but they almost got me though.

The good thing is by the time I found out the truth, I'd been writing for months, filled with the confidence I gained from their 'encouragement', whatever their real intentions may have been.

Wow - that's insane. Was the scammer looking for a fee or something?
