When performing any sort of management role, it is vitally important to remember what you are trying to achieve and why you are trying to achieve it. Effective project management will ensure that you do just that because it gives you the tools to understand and manage what you are delivering. This is more difficult in operational management as there is nothing truly defined on a day to day basis. It is easy to become "lost" and not focus on the longer term strategic end game.
