I recently came across an article in the Harvard Business Review that I found to be very interesting. They did a survey among managers and employees to rank the impact on motivation of several activities.

There's an interesting balance here that it seems to me many managers miss out on, at least most of the managers I've worked for. It is important for a leader, or company, to give direction but not micromanage. Or, we might say, to set the course, but trust the crew of the ship to follow that course to the destination avoiding obstacles along the way. And it requires a certain level of trust in your team.
