Some great tips here but I'm not sure I agree with "Steer clear of pricey freelance designers and ad agencies", which is a little too much of a generalization for my liking. While I agree that many businesses can create a great concept for a logo, I'm not convinced that necessarily translates into a great logo. Online in particular, first impressions count and design and branding is one place where many small biz attempt to cut corners, but not always successfully in my opinion.
