Speaking from some degree of experience, I can say that the mere act of planning out your content and then seeing what works and what doesn't can teach you loads. Also, don't count too much on the idea that what your competitors are doing will work for you. It's very possible that even someone you view as a competitor will have a slightly different audience simply because they have a different style or appeal. However, looking at what your competitors are doing is probably not the worst way to start. Also, I am wondering something about your strategy here. Would love if you could enlighten us further over at the BizSugar community. Is the idea here when learning about competitors' keywords to choose similar ones (which to my mind would make those keywords even more competitive to rank for) or is the idea to distinguish your keyword campaign from theirs enough so that you can make your own site stand out in searches? Hope you understand what I'm getting at here. :)

Thanks for a great comment.
That’s it, planning and testing has what works has taught me quite a lot.
Good point about competitors, I should have clarified this a bit more in the post – you’re right, what works for our competitors may not work for us and there are a range of factors.
Despite that I do find it a good starting point to find exactly what is performing well.
The way that I see it, broadly targeting keywords is the way to go right now.
Ranking for individual keywords can be tricky, it’s not impossible but certain keywords can be difficult.
You are right, targeting the same keyword as a competitor would mean the phrase gets more competitive but it’s necessary.
By looking at what competitors are ranking for and aren’t ranking for you can find content gaps that you can fill and find the keywords that are potentially driving traffic to your competitors.
There may be times when there is a keyword that a competitor ranks for that you may choose not to try to target – this may be because it sits outside of your skill set or you have decided that it’s just too competitive.
Although if it’s a relevant keyword then producing a piece of content that targets it specifically might not be such a bad idea.
It also helps to look at content gaps not only as a keyword to rank also for but a type of content to use, e.g. group interviews.
I hope that makes sense : )
