I have a standalone app for my podcast, EGO NetCast. It is up to the listener how he / she wants to listen to my podcast, but I see it as additional service to provide the listener with a podcast app. Through this app you could get extra material and push notifications.

I think it's a good thing to have both a mobile app and mobile website. Some users don't want to open browser all the time just to listen pod or consume any other content. They want an app that they would install once and can use it anytime they want without having the need to open a browser.

However, not all type of websites need to have a mobile app. For some, it doesn't make any sense to have a mobile app, like a corporate blog.
