Branding a Product and Choosing a Name can be a complex undertaking. Not taking into account Culture and Language can have far-reaching consequences.

Will the discerning Israeli driver be able to reconcile with driving Nissan's new "COCKROACH?"

Yoni,as far as I know cockroaches do have one redeeming quality. They will be the only survivors of nuclear armageddon. Maybe this would be a good selling point?

Thanks Joe,

Perhaps the one valuable asset that roaches have would be a good marketing tool!

Hi Yoni - hope you're feeling better!

I was car-pooled to school - a lot of the kids in my neighborhood were Jewish. They all went to Hebrew School after "regular" school*. If my neighborhood was typical, that means that Jewish people all over will find the ad disturbing - making it a global issue. *(At the time I felt sorry for them having to go to school "after" school, but now envy them their experience.)

Duncan,

Thanks for your kind thoughts. Double-schooling was definitely the pits. I gave up a lot of good stickball and flag football games (my mom wouldn't let me play tackle-football; typical neurotic mother) for school after school.

I'm actually taking off of work for the next 6-8 weeks (doctors order) but will persist with blogging. I'm a writer after all. It brings me inner-peace.

All the best,

Yoni

Yoni,

I'm familiar with the Nova example but the Cockroach is definately a great addition to the list of name blundres!

Heidi,

Perhaps when they get feedback from the local dealers, they might take some PR steps to "fix" the situation.

Thanks for reading and responding!

Alan,

Thanks, but I will not take credit for the insight. The folks at Nissan did all of the work, I just wrote about it.

Yoni
