Great post and topic...
The truth is that what's happening online is just an extension of what happens off-line. There will always be people who can put on an Academy Award winning act in order to swindle, cheat, and decieve, and then disappear into thin air. The Internet just makes these things a little easier to do...
In end, all we're really left with is our gut feeling. If a site, an "expert", or a person's message feels off, then that's a sign that we should be clicking our way out of there.

Great post and a great point. I loved this bit:
"the depth of knowledge they share, how they interact with their audience, and if they’re consistent."
I was talking to a small business owner about why blog the other day and mentioned a blog let me see what they have to say about their subject. His reply was "So you don't care what they say about themselves anymore." and that was exactly it.
My own pet hate in the fake expert game is the amount of credibility that gets driven by speaking engagements but I don't suppost that will change anytime soon.
On another note, loved your Facebook page. Great landing page and I think this post is a great way to promote your hump day idea.

"So you don't care what they say about themselves anymore." Love that!
Unfortunately like you say, authority is established pretty quickly in the speaking game, creates an instant shift in the minds of the audience.
The slick em quicks, of the world know how to milk that for all its worth unfortunately. You're right I dont think it will change in a hurry.
Sadly it creates a poor image/rep for the speaking industry, and there are some damned good ones out there. I suppose like all things in life, theres good and bad our job is to try to distinguish and shine a light on the good stuff.
Thanks for your comments on the Facebook page, hope to see you around there sometime too.

I agree. So many people give themselves the label of expert. You have to do some background checking and see whether they really deserve the title.

Definately a case of Buyer beware, and do your due dilligence. Trouble is some of these so called "experts" are so slick, they suck a lot of people in, then become shape shifters and move on to new territory.

So many great points in one article, where to start?
Testimonials are crap, though I do post them. Of course everyone posts the best ones. You won't see the one on my website that says, "Yoni was a complete doo-doo head. He was argumentative, belligerent and called my momma a ho." Yup, experts choose testimonials well.
Experts should be called experts by others, not by themselves. 'nother great point.
So how do we choose an expert. You've given us a great blueprint!

I think a lot of the problem is people can't see the difference between the words experts and expertise. The latter to me is what matters most.

People who know their stuff, don't constantly feel the need to tell people they know their stuff.
