To state the obvious the more you know how your customers think, feel and behave the more successful you will be with your marketing. It takes out the guesswork. Like any relationship it takes time and commitment to gain a deep understanding of your customers. Here is a quick survey for you to take to see how much you do know.

Speaking for myself, I think I probably have fewer resources for comprehensive customer research than larger companies. That said, I've seen companies that, despite the volumes of customer information they've gathered, sometimes make decisions that only reinforce their own preconceived notions of who they feel their customers are...even if the data shows those notions to be false. So I guess what's really important is not how much information you have but how you use it.

It would be interesting to hear from other small businesses to see if they have quality info about their customers, how they use it.

A really important thing here is knowing what your customers really need. This way you can avoid constantly pitching a product or service that is not appealing to them. It doesn't matter what you think is a value. What is of value to your customer? If you listen closely, they will tell you what they need.

Hi Shawn, Sometimes it is hard for businesses to work it out as it can take interpretation of what they are saying. From what I have seen, many when they are starting out especially with serices don't look at the situation from a customer's point of view or if there is a market opportunity.

Just out of interest do you think many small business have a high level of information about their customers or just assume they know all about them?
