In many areas of our lives we have a check up, such as going to the dentist or doctor to see that everything is working okay. With cars we take them to the mechanic who does a maintenance check to make sure everything is running smoothly. The same goes for marketing and here is a simple check list to review what is working and what needs attention.

Hi Susan,

As I was reading this post, it occurred to me it goes hand-in-hand with another one you wrote about too many ideas and not enough action: (http://www.m4bmarketing.com/too-many-ideas-not-enough-action/) I know my customers suffer from the same thing. Often, when I contact current key customers I haven't heard from in awhile, it's simply because they haven't found the time. It's an easy thing to put off especially if you get in the mindset of "I don't want to bug busy people" but maybe those people are just waiting to be bugged.

Thanks again for another great post.

Good list! Following your examples with the car mechanic and dentist the marketing check-up should also be done by an outside expert source. Surely it doesnt hurt to check on things yourself but I imagine that many will miss minor vital things or lose sight of the bigger overall picture (like you mentioned with prices of the competition). Especially customer feedback is important, so a short customer survey should be done every 6 months or so.

Hi Stephen,

I can see the the link you made from the examples to someone outside doing the chaeck. In hindsight I should have given different examples, just can't think of any at the moment because I am suggesting you do the check up yourself and not get someone else to do it.

You can even do the check on competitors as it isn't that difficult and with free online surveys you can do customer surveys pretty easily. Small business owners can get help if they like but if you at least do the review yourself as you can always get someone to check it.

Thanks for bring the point up and if you can think of an example instead of mechanic or dentist can you or anyone else please share.

Susan,

An EPIC post! Great analogies of a doctor's check-up and a check-up at the auto mechanic. You have presented a plan to keep a business running on all cylinders!!!

Thanks a lot Heidi, although definitely not a guru, just someone who has been in marketing quite a while. What I really like and it is something I used to tell marketers who reported to me (or better put worked with me) we all learn from each other.I know I did.

Susan
