As the co-inventor of ACT! contact management software, the product credited as the catalyst for the Customer Relationship Management (CRM) industry, I’m surprisingly not a champion of the concept of “managing relationships” at all. I don’t think entering data, scheduling activities, or even communicating with someone amounts to “management” in any meaningful way.

Mike - Great insight. Too many entrepreneurs and sales folks get too wrapped up around building database (read number of contacts) instead of focusing on building true relationship. You are going one step further in arguing that focusing on your own reputation will help you build stronger relationship. As someone rightly said it all starts with yourself.
