Did you know your customers’ lives can affect their buying behaviour? You may not be aware of it but it can affect the sales of your products or services. If they have a lot going on in their personal lives then adding complexity to their buying decisions adds stress.

I think cloud computing is another great example of this. Whatever you think of issues like security etc., it's the ease of renting as much or as little software as you need without worrying about licensing and other headaches that will eventually win people over.

This is another good example of substitution. Thanks for adding it.

Susan,

This is a simple but effective way of differentiating your product. It seems to me a lot of Internet shopping options are examples of this. Products online are often less money, don't require a trip to the store, hence no need to use more gas, face crowds at the mall etc. These are simple maybe even minor differentiations but they've been the key to Amazon's and even Ebay's successes.

They are good examples Heather and you are right about minor differentiation. Sometimes we make it harder for ourselves by not thinking simply and from a customer's perspective.
