Your Customers Have The Need But Do They Have The Desire?

There is a lot written about targeting customers who have a need. That is correct, however when marketing your products or services this can lead you in the wrong direction. You need to work out the difference between those customers having a need and those that actually have a desire to take action.

Susan,

Two points should probably be added to this:

1. There will inevitably be a certain number of those interested in the product enough to create referrals even if they themselves are still unwilling or unready to buy and this group must be taken into account as well since they ideally act as ad hoc marketing for your brand with their friends and connections.

2. Not all potential customers are ready to act now. Some must be developed (trained?) as customers. I need to thank the great Sonia Simone of Copyblogger for this idea shared in her post "How to Find Thousands More Prospects for Your Business" which we shared in yesterday's small business news roundup at Small Business Trends and which I will try to post here at BizSugar later if it hasn't been shared already.

Some great thoughts in your post though and I liked Stoney's post as well. Thanks for sharing.

Shawn,

You make 2 good points that are true and even though we are ready and eager some customers are not at that stage.

Thanks for adding the points.

Susan,

You can take the Yoni out of the writing, but you can't take the writing out of the Yoni! I'm addicted. I need help!

Susan,

Great article and great points! I really like the analogy of fitness. I saw a statistic recently that only 25-30% of gym members still attend after the first three months, they see a need but have no desire.

I saw Stoney's article reposted here on Bizsugar recently; it was a good one.

Thanks for a great article on marketing, targeting and influencing!

Yoni
