While we certainly can, and do, buy more goods, services and luxury items today than we did 60 years ago, are we really better off today? Is standard of living relevant to happiness?

Maybe a little better off, Coach - now we can buy a complete TV season on DVD for $40 & watch w/no commercials (even a 60 year old show). That's improved my quality of life some. Medicine, while crazy-expensive, has improved leaps & bounds, we landed on the Moon, there was no WWIII, racial & gender equality are much closer than they were, and automobiles are safer with better mileage (safety standards have improved all over). But I like your points - it ain't all better than it was in '50. Long distance is cheaper, too. (I can think of Lots of things that are better now, but I gotta move on - progress.)
