Columnist Jim Blasingame writes these thoughts about small business at CommercialAppeal.com as another Labor Day comes and goes here in the U.S. Why no celebration for entrepreneurs who have done so much for the economy, especially those who operate the nation's small business. Some numbers here from Jim. Small businesses, as it happens, represent an astonishing 98 percent of all U.S. business and produce more than half of the U.S. $13 trillion Gross National Product, so why not some kind of celebration. Some of Jim's rhetoric is a bit strident for my tastes and I've never been much in awe of public pronouncements or celebrations even if made or held in my honor. I think an entrepreneur's thanks must be his/her work, the product they produce, but there are concerns to be raised about a culture that seems largely unaware of some of the greatest contributors to its success. And what will happen to that culture if it loses site of some of the qualities that have made it great.
