Just like immortal swordsmen, walking the earth, we all meet at the Gathering of the search results page. Hundreds of millions of times each day, Google is showing top 10 lists. And there’s only one spot at the top of Google for a given phrase. There can be only one…

I write just about all of the written content I publish to any of my sites, so content quality has never been an issue for me. I was writing professionally for a local newspaper at age 17, interviewing now-professional athletes while I was still in high school, and definitely consider it to be among my strengths.

Some excellent points made throughout the article. The only partners I've found with regard to this topic are companies who do what mine does, but are located on the opposite side of the planet (Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, etc.).

I once made the mistake of becoming too attached to a single source of rankings-enhancing, high-value hyperlinks in Mixx, and am still feeling the effects of that loss today - not just in the form of rankings but content as well. If I could get back all the content I invested into that site I'm sure I could do something constructive with.

You're one of the few people Mr. Leonard whose advice on this topic I'll gladly absorb.

I recall a time when I was once in discussions with a man who had a site similar enough to the one I was promoting at the time regarding SEO right before the big one announced it was opening a zoo full of Pandas and Penguins (whichever came first). Tings never materialized - which likely worked out well for both of us considered what was to come.

Part of my hesitancy was that I had an intuitive feeling in my gut that change was imminent. Working in this field long enough and surviving as long as I have since I became an entrepreneur at age 23 with no experience whatsoever aside from that as a writer/journalist, one develops a feel for those things, and while it seemed to make sense on paper, I couldn't bring myself to pull the trigger and in retrospect am glad I didn't. It's scary to think of what could have happened had I acted upon said conversations, considering that a few short months later the game was dramatically altered in a manner that made clear such tactics are not ideal strategy.

Yes, the game HAS changed. And not just because of what tactics work and what tactics do not anymore, but because of how Google treats sites that do not meet the thresholds it sets for quality of links and quality of content.

Hi there, David. Nice post. Of course, I'm a sucker for Highlander references. :) I guess you are right, though. When ranking first in your niche, cooperation goes out the window. Or to put it another way, there can be only one. :)

Hi David,

There are some qualifications to be made here. If we're talking about ranking high for your name or company name, well, that's not much of a trick if your the only one on the Web and it won't bring traffic. If it's a camera shop in East Jabip and East Jabip has a population of 432, again, ranking is no trick and traffic will be nothing to write home about. So, what we're ranking high for makes a difference and that's where the real challenge comes in.

That is always the case. I think what the author was trying to get across, however, if that ranking #1 for "camera shop East Jabip" is worth a lot more than ranking #7 (for example) for a much more searched term, such as "cameras Jabip County".
