One year ago I started down the scary-but-exciting path of becoming a blogger, and I’ve survived to tell the tale (don’t laugh; many bloggers quit in less than a year!). Here are 8 lessons I've learned that may help you in your early blogging endeavors.

Yoni,

I so appreciate and respect your comment - thanks for taking the time, and for your kind words. I love comments as a way to have an intelligent discourse with colleagues and peers. And, of course, I'm still learning on the blogging front.

As for the issue of writing from your own perspective, I think my point comes from my personal experience. I spent many years in technology marketing, and now work with many clients in the tech sector who have a traditional 'push marketing' approach - a natural inclination to say "here's what my product does and why you should buy it" rather than "here's an issue you may be facing, let me offer a perspective that may help you." We give lots of coaching on how to turn around from a push to a pull mentality, which is what I think differentiates 'social marketing' from traditional marketing and has, in fact, turned the profession of marketing on its head.

That said, I appreciate and agree with your point that a good blog is one that shows some personality and personal experiences of the blogger -- much like a good editorial columnist. Frankly, though, I think that comes with time and practice. Step 1: move from being a marketer to being a writer; Step 2: move from being a writer to becoming a blogger; Step 3: move to becoming a good blogger with a distinct personality.

Maybe I'm over thinking it - but I think I'll turn this into a new blog post!

Cheers!

Swssem,

Great article! I do have one small point of respectful disagreement. I think that writing, blogging from one's own perspective is a plus, at least from my own experience. I believe that when readers want to take that very important next step and do business with the writer, they want to get to know the writer better. Their ways of thinking, their mindset, basically what makes them tick. Their values, their aspirations and their mentality. I believe that one's personal perspectives interjected into a business blog is the way to lay it all on the table and say "here I am...here is what I can potentially offer to you!"

In spite of this tiny difference in perspectives, I think this was, like your other posts I have read, a wonderful and insightful piece.

I wish you much success and many more years of blogging!

Yoni
