Like any machine on a path to world domination, Google is getting smarter. With it’s latest update, Hummingbird, it is now better able to understand context rather than just content.

Keywords are certainly still important and how your content is developed and coded continues to matter. But, and we’ve been saying this since day one, the quality of your content is of more value to Google than the quantity.

Each article I read about Hummingbird confirms this. And I’m glad. Because, ultimately, the purpose of content should be to inform, educate, inspire and challenge your target audience.

But, let’s look at it this way. Social media. There, I said it.

Social media has changed a lot of how we market our businesses online. Not because it’s the new thing or because Facebook is fun. Social media has made it possible for real people to share valuable information with other real people… from anywhere and all the dang time!

I think Google is getting better at delivering quality results. At the end of the day quality content is a better holistic marketing approach and a better bet in terms of targeting the search engines. I think if we try to game Google we run a higher risk of failure. Either way, I don't think quality content will save the Internet Marketing world. But, it is an important piece of an overall marketing strategy and Google (whether technically this is 100% the case or not) is at least confirming this publicly.

Hi Jon-Mikel,

All great news...if true. The question is whether Google's search engine is still all the company says or thinks it is. Do you still see seemingly undeserving content flourish while more interesting content seems to languish unseen and with poor ranking? More importantly, do you still find it difficult to find the things you are searching for...and if you need to be a search expert to find what you're looking for on Google, than has it really achieved its purpose? I appreciate the effort that Google is making, but I'm not quite ready to drink the cool aide. As a Web developer, are you confident telling clients quality content is all you need? Hope you'll share your thoughts at length in the comment section on BizSugar. I'm sure it will benefit the whole community.
