I keep hearing about the marketing potential of Google Places, so I thought it best to look into what all the fuss is about. Google seems to be continually innovating and trying new avenues, and in line with their search engine, their foray into the “Google Places” product seems natural.

Hi Fiona,

I agree about the growing importance of Google Places, especially as Google seems to be putting lots of attention in this area. But I always warn clients that this is not another website, and that Google owns the listing. Clients often say "why is stuff (reviews, even competitor listings) showing up on my Place Page when I didn't put it there?" It can be misleading.

Though the Internet is global, it seems the trend toward increasingly localized content is here. It runs the spectrum from tools like Google's to check-in platforms like Foursquare and Facebook Places. And let's not forget that Google AdSense and AdWords are becoming increasingly localized too.
