In this second post on StumbleUpon over the last two days I wanted to share this great video on how to promote your small business Website with StumbleUpon. In the video, Bob Sommers does a great job of explaining how this particular social bookmarking sites works and even some tips. (Submitting your own sites is bad form so get your friend to do it.) Anyway, Bob argues StumbleUpon is just another way to build attention and traffic to your site even if it doesn't happen to be placing on Google's first page.

You know, I think this has a great deal to do with how such sites are used. My experience has been that with sites as vastly different as StumbleUpon, LinkedIn, heck, even BizSugar, there can be a sort of law of diminishing returns if one only promotes one's own site. You sort of soak up all the fans you can get out of the site and then move on. HOWEVER, if you do more participating and sharing than simply promoting, if you suggest other sites in your interest area, vote for those you like and invite others to do the same, you are much more likely to come away with something much more valuable. Namely, social relationships that may turn into business relationships over time, and good business relationships at that which instead of a single minor add click may bring you long term clients and customers in ways you might never have suspected. Be very careful about measuring only the duration of visits you get from any one site and look more at the return traffic and the long term relationships you build. I admit I often may look at a site only briefly the first pass on most social networks. But if I return to the site again and again, if I decide as a result to forge connections with the owner of the site maybe even doing business together at some point in the future, THIS is the real measure of social media and its value.

I have not tracked it well enough to give data but I agree with Shawn the value of stumbleupon is in the return visit. My own personal use I spend very little time on the site when stumbling but the pages that I really find of interest I bookmark for later and often subscribe to and become a part of the community.

I haven't used StumbleUpon much. In one way the domain name says it all, you stumble upon a site that you like (or not). The thing it to come back to the original site and spend time there. How would you compare and contrast StumbleUpon with Delicious?

Cindy is spot on. My stats show that the average visitor stays on my site 4 minutes (last time I looked) and with SU traffic it is under a minute.

StumbleUpon is a great tool for beginner blogs to get traffic. It's also a good place to network with other social bookmarking friends.

Once you start getting natural traffic, it's appeal is a little less interesting. StumbleUpon tends to bring "empty" traffic - the value is mainly in the traffic numbers to your site.

This video gives an in-depth how-to that is easy to follow.
