I don't use Google Plus that much, neither have I had a good look around it. I therefore had no idea it had communities.

G+ is not only helping in generaing traffic, but being a Google's family it helps in branding and ranking also. Since it is merge with Google Places and other portals it is now considered quiet seriously by every online portal.
