In a web world that is now built on the conversations that we have with others, whether that’s via Skype, email, Twitter, or blogging, we need to always be responding to those who reach out to us. As the very relevant saying goes – we love to buy from those who we know, like and trust. In creating that know, like and trust factor a very important element online becomes good content, but besides having the good content what is equally important are the people who enjoy what you do and what you have to say. These individuals become the ambassador of your brand or fans of you online. You never know who is going to become your next biggest ambassador so do you really want to risk that by not responding back to someone?

I totally agree, you always need to respond somehow. I know we are all busy and get caught up in things, but some kind of response is nice.

Hi Angie,

I'm with you on this one! Just a simple message saying Hi or thank you goes along way. After all that's what online world is all about communication and building relationships!

Thanks Yoni, I'm glad you liked the article!

For me I hate when I put a lot of thought into commenting on someones content and they choose to not even recognize it. Just seems like a waste of time then.

I think I'm going to start implementing your 3 strikes and your out rule when commenting.

The odd thing for me was when I left a comment on a blog article that solely addressed the issue of communication - of always replying to (non-spam) comments, and got no reply. I don't think the author even knew, but it looked bad.

Ah yes, unanswered comments. I have left so many here an in other venues. A vast majority seem to go unanswered. And yes Duncan you are right in the irony. I've left so many in pieces about communication, respecting others and putting the "Social" in Social Media.

Seems that a lot of folks are just too busy to respond. I generally implement the "Three strikes and you're out rule": three unanswered comments and I stop leaving them (and voting).

Great points Jason and fine article!

That does look bad for that author, but it's another example of how not responding can effect someone's brand. Thanks for sharing Duncan!
