I agree that icons draw attention right up front . Majority of the users will see them interesting but they should be used with extreme caution since some symbols don't render nicely in all email clients . Overuse would be tiresome and make your emails look unprofessional.

The real lesson to be learned here is the degree to which Lynette tested the icons before adding them to her e-mail subject lines & blog post titles!

I'm curious about whether or not e-mail spam filters will start focusing on these and how a Site with custom permalinks "reads" the symbols.

I actually received an e-mail from Lynette with one of the smileys in it, and I have to admit: It did grab my attention.

This is so interesting. I might have to try it. I can see how it can be attention grabbing as it's not something that you see all the time.

This is very interesting. I've seen it before on profiles but never in an email subject line. I get so much email something a little different would stand out to me. I'm sure that's the case with most people so, like Lynette said, used sparingly it may help to grab the readers attention to get your email opened. Every little bit helps!
