As a musician and longtime fan of Dave Matthews, I found your post interesting on several levels. First, it's pretty interesting that at one time the record industry's pricing strategy was fairly competitive for the product they were providing, so it's instructive to remember how much of an industry's problems can really be boiled down to an unworkable business model. Second, there was a time when music, and show business in general, was unrivaled in its ability to create excitement around a brand. Things have changed, but the principle hasn't. Whoever creates the most interest wins, and, if your customers have forgotten all about you, you've lost.
