I was already familiar with guest blogging contests as a sponsor and as a reader/voter, but organizing one is a different matter. Here are a few things I learned.

It is a lot more complex than you'd think. I have always had a difficult time capturing quality submissions more than any of the other items you listed. On occasion I have actually felt guilty awarding the prizes.

I'm glad it worked out well. Sponsorship, as you said is the key: nobody wants to compete for a 5lb turkey. It's good exposure for the sponsors, and really at minimal cost.
