President and CEO of Rank Smart Search Marketing Ben Pfeiffer ponders the question whether it will ever be possible to recover from search downgrades that happened as a result of the Google Penguin algorithm update. The update was apparently meant, in part, to penalize Websites engaging in what Google considered unfair attempts to gain higher search ranking. But if recovery for sites is really impossible no matter how many corrections you make, Pfeiffer asks, then what is a website owner, particularly the owner of a business site that depends upon traffic for its revenue, to do?

Hi Ben,

A scary post to say the least. I'm wondering if you've heard any other suggestions beyond "conversion optimization." As you say, this would seem to require traffic to optimize conversion from. I suppose it's possible increased social media traffic and sharing could fill some of the gap taken away as a result of lower ranking. But I've not seen too many sites myself, even those with relatively low ranking, where search engine traffic was not a pretty important part of the equation.
