One and two are related here. Because the rates you charge are connected to the amount of work you must do to break even. And that, in turn, has to do with the amount of time and energy spent marketing and the quality of future jobs. A vicious circle!

No doubt about it. That's one of the traps that many freelance writers are snared by, unfortunately.
This is the reason that I advise writers to focus on finding long term clients first and foremost. This is the way to income stability over the long term.
Initially, the focus needs to be on finding great clients, over great jobs. While a great job might pay the bills this month, the same cycle (you mentioned) will be repeated again next month.
