Last week I said that adding value was more important than the number of followers in social media. This week I touch on the numbers and why they DO matter, to give you credibility. Read on.

I'm a bit off-point Marsha, but I know that many WWI airplanes had Rotary engines - where the cylinders rotate around the shaft, instead inline (like a V-12 "Spitfire" WWII engine), or Radial, like many Japanese & U.S. Navy fighters of WWII (where the cylinders are fixed, and the shaft moves) - like the Zero, or the Vought F4U Corsair gull-wing fighter.

In aircraft, Rotary engines created so much torque it was difficult to steer the plane - because the whole engine rotates around the shaft. All propeller planes had torque depending on which way the propeller spun, and ace pilots used it to their advantage by turning with the torque, while getting the enemy to fight against his own. Jet propulsion ended the torque problem.

For example, the Sopwith Camel & Fokker Dreidekker (triplane) had Rotary engines.

P.S. I didn't mean for that to sound overly-harsh. I just think that a lot of people have gotten their egos very wrapped up in the numbers game.

I also cringe when I see that someone has 250,000 followers but in turn they are following 250,000 others, many of whom are dubious in nature.

Marsha,

I have to very respectfully disagree. I laugh (respectfully) when I see the number of Twitter followers people have.

I checked out one guy's account who recently posted that he had reached 100,000 followers. I checked out his first, or last?, 100 followers as a sampling. At least 80% of them were spammers, pornographers and other types of weirdos.

I have 800 Twitter followers and if I whittled down all of the non-relevant ones (pornographers, gamblers, hookers, steroid-peddlers, etc.) I'm sure I would be left with no more than 50 legit followers.

I'm just not sure how much credence i give, or how much of a reputation I see/expect when someone says they have 250,000 followers.
