Verizon Wireless and the Verizon Foundation, in conjunction with the New York State Office for the Prevention of Domestic Violence (OPDV), today announced the launch of the Verizon Domestic Violence Entrepreneurship Grant Program, which will provide grants to domestic violence survivors to help them successfully develop small businesses.

I'm not sure about research on whether they want to run small businesses? It's an interesting question. But whether working for others or thjemselves, financial independence is the key to breaking out of the cycle of violence.

Braden,

You are right in a sense. The amount of the donation is relatively small. But I tend to think that even donations like this, maybe a symbolic amount, go a long way to publicize the plight of those who have suffered domestic abuse. Many women, from what I read, want to leave abusive situations, but can't because they are financially "tied" to their abusers. Hopefully for some, this will be a way out and a way to get started on their own.

Rivkah, nice post and subject matter! Great cause, but I have to say Verizon reported $1.8 billion for 2010 Q1. A $45,000 donation against that seems kind of small?
