I'm often amazed when someone tells me they are not on LinkedIn and they are in business for themselves or a senior exec at a company. I have been using it for years, in many of the ways you suggest, Ian, but I learned a bunch of new techniques. Thanks for sharing.

LinkedIn has been a great resource for a long time. Admittedly it has been much improved with the addition of apps, groups and Q&A, but these are great tips to catch you up if you haven't "gotten on the bandwagon" yet.

Excellent tips. I have recently started using LinkedIn and have been reading every article I can find about using it more effectively, most just offer generic tips such as make sure you have a picture. This list actually provides tips that are useful. I particularly liked the "watch others status updates to initiate contact" that will make striking up conversations much easier. Thanks for the tips.

I think LinkedIn is a great resource and probably underused by many...including me. These are great tips and I'll take them to heart.
